What Price

We stand on the precipice of war . . .

a single step, a breath off balance

over the cornice, no way back

treacherous as a frozen waterfall

crash upon the rocks, no salvation

the eternal flame, glass.

Missed communication ignites passion

beliefs fought in the name of religion,

mired in a cesspool of oil.

Do we stand alone?

Will our best efforts prevent pestilence

or exacerbate the pungent odor of terror and burned flesh?

What price are we willing to pay?

What price for freedom?
