Fall
Fall comes early to
the mountainside,
subtle color changes barely noticeable,
a slight evening chill after a tortuously hot day.
Morning dew drops form
on dry blades of grass.
Haze filters the light of the morning
sunrise.
Squirrels forage for acorns and pine
nuts.
Birds head south
toward their southern homes.
Butterflies disappear from pale drying
blossoms.
The moon sets early on the silhouette
of an ever darkening hillside.
